JULIEN THERESETTE- LYON, FRANCE

IN THE FLESH
There are many ways to create a character, and many ways to lose them. The more the point of origin for your character comes from outside (a story, a relationship, an accent…), the more you are likely to let go of some of its traits during a scene. But is there a way to give your character an anchoring point so that whatever happens you can get it back at a moment’s notice? The story, relations and events are not yours; but your body is. Use it to your advantage! You can create a character through body posture, movements and rhythms. With practice and observation, it is possible to come up with the basis for whatever persona you may need. It is possible to use this work to make up a character that is expected (the situation demands that you play a high and mighty duke or a nervous bride-to-be, for instance) or surprise yourself and the audience with an instant creation. Create a body, live with it and it will bring truthful reactions to whatever is thrown at you.

EMOTIONAL BODY
An actor needs to play emotions on stage, But playing deep and sincere emotions isn't always easy, especially when the actor is improvising. There is physical way to find emotions more than a psychological one. When you feel pain for example, your body moves and reacts: physical posture and breathing match together in adequacy with the emotion. During workshop, you will learn how to play emotions like anger, joy, sadness, and fear, by using physical work and breathing techniques. Let the mind deal with its own part of the job, the body knows how to show emotions.

LIVING SCENERY
The Improv actor lives in a world where nothing exists unless it is needed. How many kitchens with only a fridge and a table? How many cars start without a key? How often have we seen people stomping their feet, pretending to be walking through a forest or on a street without ever seeing where they were? You can either say what you’re doing, or do it and keep your words for something better, deeper, more meaningful. Using your body to make your surroundings alive on stage is like switching from a slideshow with boring commentary to a full motion picture. You get the audience to see where you are and make it all the more believable. It even has the bonus effect of providing the player with potential game possibilities. Of course, it takes practice and concentration to add physical awareness to situational awareness but the impact on the audience is quite measurable. You want a chimney in your living room? Build it! It will keep you warm and you can throw the step mother in it!

MORPHING
When on stage, we create stories and situations with what we have: a suggestion, a word, a place. But we also have a resource that is ever present: ourselves. With this workshop, we will find out that the body can be the source from which the story will form. Taking a position, an image will appear and with it, a whole world of possibilities. This workshop will make it possible to shift the flow of the story without stopping it. No more need for cuts, sweeps, tag-outs…etc. This morphing technique induces chances and accidents that will keep the performers on their toes, enforcing acceptance and the absence of judgment. Collaboration is the key word and one of the greatest motors in improvisation.
